WHY WE DO WHAT WE DO
At the Children’s Advocacy Center of Cameron and Willacy Counties, we understand that not all trauma is visible. TBI can have lifelong effects on learning, memory, and mental health — and early identification is key to helping children heal and thrive.
Common Signs of TBI in Children:
-
Frequent headaches or dizziness
-
Sudden changes in mood or behavior
-
Trouble concentrating or remembering things
-
Fatigue or difficulty sleeping
-
Sensitivity to light or noise
-
Problems with balance or coordination

ABOUT
Understanding Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)
A Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) occurs when an external force causes damage to the brain. In children, TBIs can result from falls, vehicle accidents, physical abuse, or other forms of trauma. The impact may be mild — such as a brief change in consciousness — or severe, leading to long-term challenges in thinking, behavior, and emotional regulation.
