April is Child Abuse Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness, educating communities, and taking action to protect children. Across the country—and right here in Cameron and Willacy Counties—organizations like the Children’s Advocacy Centers of Cameron and Willacy Counties (CACCWC) are working every day to ensure that children are safe, supported, and heard.
But awareness alone is not enough.
Prevention starts with all of us.
What Is Child Abuse Awareness Month?
Child Abuse Awareness Month is a national campaign focused on preventing abuse before it happens. It highlights the importance of recognizing warning signs, supporting families, and building stronger, safer communities for children.
The blue pinwheel, the national symbol of child abuse prevention, represents the happy, healthy childhood every child deserves. Throughout April, you’ll see pinwheels displayed across communities as a reminder that every child’s future matters.
Understanding the Reality of Child Abuse
Child abuse is not always visible. It can take many forms, including:
Physical abuse
Emotional abuse
Sexual abuse
Neglect
Many children suffer in silence, which is why awareness and education are critical. Recognizing the signs can be the difference between continued harm and a child receiving help.
Common Warning Signs to Watch For
Unexplained injuries
Sudden changes in behavior
Withdrawal or isolation
Fearfulness or anxiety
Age-inappropriate knowledge
If something doesn’t feel right, trust your instincts. You don’t need proof to take action—you just need concern.
Why Prevention Matters
Prevention is about more than reacting to abuse—it’s about stopping it before it begins.
When communities invest in prevention:
Families receive the support they need
Children grow up in safer environments
Cycles of abuse can be broken
Strong communities build strong families. And strong families create safe, thriving children.
The Role of the Community
Protecting children is not the responsibility of one organization—it’s a shared responsibility.
You can make a difference by:
Becoming a volunteer
Supporting local child advocacy efforts
Donating essential items like hygiene products, snacks, or comfort items
Being a safe, trusted adult in a child’s life
Sometimes, the most powerful impact comes from simply showing up, listening, and caring.
How CACCWC Is Making a Difference
Since 1998, the Children’s Advocacy Centers of Cameron and Willacy Counties has helped thousands of children begin the healing process after abuse.

It Starts With Us
Child Abuse Awareness Month is more than a campaign—it’s a call to action.
Every conversation, every moment of awareness, and every act of support helps create a safer future for children.
Because every child deserves more than just protection…
They deserve a childhood filled with safety, love, and possibility.
